SCADA Historian Database Connection Drops: Connection Pooling, TCP Keep-Alives & Locks

Diagnose and prevent database disconnection crashes in Ignition, FactoryTalk, and Wonderware historians: tuning JDBC connection pools, TCP keep-alive sockets, and table deadlocks.

  • Corporate network firewalls terminate idle TCP database connections after 15–30 minutes unless keep-alives are configured.
  • Heavy analytic reporting queries can lock historian tables, preventing the SCADA server from inserting real-time points.
  • Always configure a secondary store-and-forward disk cache on the SCADA server to buffer data during database outages.
