RS-485 Ground Loops & Galvanic Isolation: Preventing Transceiver Burnout

Protect industrial electronics from destructive ground potential differences: common-mode voltage limits, optical isolation, shield grounding rules, and surge protection.

  • Standard non-isolated RS-485 transceivers will be destroyed if the local ground potential difference between nodes exceeds -7V to +12V.
  • Connecting the cable shield at both ends across different buildings creates dangerous ground circulating currents.
  • Always deploy 2.5kV or 5kV optically isolated RS-485 repeaters for outdoor or inter-building runs.
