Precision Time Protocol (IEEE 1588 PTP): Sub-Microsecond Clock Synchronization in OT

Why Network Time Protocol (NTP) is insufficient for high-speed industrial applications: Precision Time Protocol (PTP v2), grandmaster clocks, transparent clocks, and sequence of events (SOE).

  • NTP provides millisecond-level time accuracy; PTP achieves sub-microsecond synchronization via hardware timestamping.
  • In high-speed power substations, Sequence of Events (SOE) recording requires 1-millisecond resolution to determine which breaker tripped first.
  • Boundary and Transparent switches measure internal packet forwarding jitter to eliminate network latency drift.
