Gravity Dual-Media Filters: Automatic Backwash Sequencing & Turbidity Spikes Mitigation

Step-by-step engineering of automated rapid gravity dual-media (sand/anthracite) filter backwash cycles: head loss triggers, air scour blowers, high-rate water wash, and filter-to-waste sequencing.

  • Filters are triggered to backwash by differential head loss, runtime timer (typically 48 to 72 hours), or turbidity breakthrough.
  • Air scour must precede water backwash to rub media grains against each other and detach sticky biological floc.
  • Freshly backwashed media requires a "Filter-to-Waste" ripening period to rebuild the micro-straining surface mat before feeding drinking water mains.
