High-Speed Counter (HSC) Modules: Solving Missed Pulses, Noise False-Triggers & Filtering

Field guide to configuring PLC High-Speed Counter (HSC) inputs: software input filter frequencies, pulse width limits, differential RS-422 vs 24V PNP sinking/sourcing, and debounce tuning.

  • Standard PLC input cards have a built-in hardware low-pass RC filter (typically 3ms to 10ms) that completely blinds them to kilohertz signals.
  • High-Speed Counter modules bypass the standard input scan, counting pulses asynchronously in dedicated silicon chips.
  • If the module input filter is set to 20 microseconds, any pulse narrower than 20us is ignored as noise.
